ANBA monthly online meeting ft Jane Frost (19 Apr 2026)

From the Cosmos to the Hive: a native bee photography journey

By Jane Frost

Abstract: Capturing images of Australia’s native bees can be frustrating and fantastic all at the same time. While European honey bees generally fly in lazy, predictable patterns before slowly alighting on a flower, Australian natives dart and zig zag unpredictably and sometimes leave without landing at all. This challenge, along with the diminutive size of some species make photography a challenge. This presentation shares five simple tips for bee photography, some of the photographer’s favourite species and the images that motivate her to keep trying for better shots.

Biography: Jane Frost has great enthusiasm for the natural world, particularly as it pertains to Native Australian Flora and Fauna. She is a teacher who currently works on projects with disengaged teenagers using the natural world, photography and videography to spark their curiosity and improve literacy and numeracy outcomes. When she is at home she can often be found in the garden with a camera or at the computer editing photos and videos. She has been fortunate enough to win prizes for her photos and to have some published in books and a calendar. She is the Media Officer for the Cassowary Coast Branch of the ANBA.

ANBA members can attend online, a link to join will be sent by email approximately 1-2 days prior to the event.
